Core loss caluclated by PIXls very high...please comfirm?

Posted by: treez on

Hi,
I have just done a PIXls design for Hiper-PFS-4. Its for a 300W Boost PFC as follows
VACmin input = 185VAC
VACmax input = 265VAC
Pout=300W; Vout = 400V; 50Hz; Sendust torroid; Magnet wire wound; Efficiency estimate=0.91; 40degC

PIXls chose a 77930 Torroid from Mag-Inc with 79 turns.
PIxls comes up with a core loss of 5.12W. This is way above the 0.23W that I calculated using Mag-Inc ‘s own equations. Please could you confirm the 5.12W Core loss calculation?

Core loss calculation

Hi treez,

Please let us know what tool you are using for the calulations?

'PI Expert Online' ot 'PI Expert Suite'?

If you are using 'PI Expert Suite' what is the version of it?

Kind Regards,

Hi
Its PIXls designer
I downloaded it from your site
Release 10.3.2.9

Hi treez,

I did check the HIPER Spreadsheet in the PIExpert Online Suit Release 10.3.2.9. The version there is Hiper_PFS-4_Boost_051319; Rev.1.2; 2019.

I applied your data and I am facing a couple of issues with the information provided.

1. The default core suggested from the spreadsheet for those particular inputs is 77548 and not 77930 as stated above.

2. When I manually changed the core to 77930 the displayed core losses in line 95 is 2.784W. This is not 5.12W as stated initially.

3. Turns suggested are 155, for the core and power in question. Not 79 turns.

Anyway, taking the spreadsheet given results:

Very rough, single point, “Rule of Thumb” calculations with Magnetics-Curve-Fit-Eq-Tool for the given BACpp, max frequency and core volume, the core losses could be approximated as 2.2W.

The difference between 2.8W (spreadsheet) and 2.2W (basic, constant parameters calculations) could be explain with the very comprehensive mains cycle average losses calculation employed by the spreadsheet.

As generic comment, it is very unlikely to have 0.23W core losses for 300W boost converter with 91% efficiency.

Kind Regards,
