Offline SMPS in plastic enclosure needs metal foil lining?

Posted by: treez on

Hi,

We want to put a 60W innoswitch design in a plastic case. (100-265vac)

Do you agree, it will never pass Radiated EMC unless we have a metal lining inside the plastic  case?

Hi treez,

Yes, shielding will be necessary.

Thanks so much for your excellent reply.

Sorry to ask, but please  do you have an official document, which prooves that all offline, hard switched SMPS, above 50W in power, need metal shielded enclosure otherwise they will not possibly pass radiated EMC testing? We need the proof, to give to the boss.

Any document that points to this conclusion will be massively helpful. Anything at all.

Hi treez,

We do not have readily available materials on radiated EMI, but metal shield will help to pass radiated EMI.

You can refer to teardowns of power supply adapter >50W - during power supply disassembly there are metal shield in place used for radiated EMI.
