Increasing Power delivery, Efficiency & Cost Effectiveness of Power Converters

The emergence of wide bandgap semiconductors has provided an opportunity to dramatically increase the efficiency of power conversion and extend the power range for flyback architectures in power conversion. To understand the importance of WBG semiconductors it is necessary to isolate the contribution of the power switch in conversion efficiency and compare GaN to SiC and and FETs.
In this presentation we will review the contribution of GaN switches to increasing efficiency across different converter applications and power levels and describe how the ability to support higher operating current in the primary switch as the result of lower RDS(ON) will allow flybacks to challenge LLC converters at increasing power levels. We will offer a prediction of how much power flyback topologies will be able to deliver.
The performance of GaN devices (HEMT or cascode) in increased line voltage applications is another area which will be explored during this presentation. Finally we will examine how to determine the trade-offs between lowest cost and highest performance in converter architecture –categorizing, ZVS, active clamping and SR as well as new switching architectures in arriving at the most cost effective architectures that meet efficiency, no-load and standby specifications fort different applications.
