Why does powerint design LED bulbs for incandescant dimmers?

Posted by: treez on

Hello,

I notice that a large number of powerint ref designs for LED bulbs are designed to be triac dimmable, or trailing edge dimmer dimmable.

Both these types of dimmers were never meant for LED light bulbs.

Triac dimmers are very lossy when used with LED bulbs. Triac dimmers will damage LED bulbs not designed for them

Trailing edge dimmers are an improvement, but still have poor power factor, and higher-then-necessary mains rms current.

Why is a big company like powerint not leading the market and bringing in a new type of dimmer, ie, the "Mains signal" dimmer?

This features a wall dimmer with a pushbutton switch....when you press the switch, one whole half cycle of mains is switched out at the zero crossings.....a detector in the bulb detects this and dims by 5%.

This offers great power factor when dimming , and greater dimming efficiency, -howcome big companies like powerint are not lobbying the government to fund development and marketing of such a dimmer?

Here is the details...

BTW, we are bringing to market a new type of LED lightbulb dimmer which will sweep the world!
It is literally just a pushbutton switch by the side of your light switch.......when you press it, a mosfet in-line with the mains live will switch off at the mains zero crossing, and then back on at the next mains zero crossing............a simple circuit inside the led lightbulb will detect this missing half cycle, and dim the led light down....or back up again if it was already dimmed right down.
As you can tell....you just keep pushing the button till you like the dimness.
...This type of dimmer, since it switches the fet at the zero crossings, will not damage any type of lightbulb.......obviously it needs the simple "detector" cct in the led ligthbulb, but that'll be easy to do.....it could also be doe with flu's.

Forget those old triac dimmers which just don't work with all types of dimmable led bulb...and indeed, leading edge dimmers can reduce led bulb lifetime if accidentally left on with a non dimmable led bulb due to resonances in the emi filter of the bulb.

When can we expect powerint support for this new and improved type of wall dimmer?

Hi,

Currently we need to be compatible to the existing wiring system of the house today.  But then, we are open for new technogies like dimming though your i-phone, analogue dimming, digital dimming etc....    Our company can adopt to the need of the end customer depending on the demand, thank you for your great suggestion.
