Regarding generation of isolated windings in TNY280 design.
Hello PI Support,
While there is good appnote (AN-20) regarding design of TinySwitch-III family. I am using offline excel sheet (attached) for transformer design to generate 3 isolated outputs, a. 5V/0.8A (main output), b. 5V/0.2A & c. 24V/0.05A. However, transformer design generated in PIXLS shows stacked windings & there seems no options to separate the windings & calculate secondary turns as per that.
Could you please advise how can I seperate windings & generate the transformer design that I need.
Regards,
JK

Hello Tommy,
Thanks for your response & information. I highly appreciate the support you are offering. Please note the below details,
- Input range: 85VAC to 300VAC.
- Outputs 5V/0.8A (Main), 5V/0.2A & 24V/0.05A.
- I am looking for EE20 core & its respective bobbin to fit all windings.
- Primary--Seconday isolation 3KVAC/ 1min.
- Between any seconday 3KVAC/ 1min. May be we can use TIW windings.
- Will be good if split primary windings are used to have better regulation.
We have the existing the design which I am looking to modify, so TinySwitch-III (TNY280) will be preferred. Please let me know if you have any further questions around that.
Regards,
JK
Hi JK,
Good day and thanks for sharing the information.
Kindly refer to pages 9 to 11 of the attached file for the transformer construction report of the design. Clicking the link below will also redirect you to its PI Expert Online design where you can change the pin allocation of the transformer, play around with the parameters and optimize the overall design as you wish to.
If you have any questions or clarifications regarding the attached initial design or about our PI Expert Online, please don't hesitate to reach out again. I will be glad to guide you further on these aspects.
Thank you and I wish you a great day ahead!
Best regards,
Tommy

Hello Tommy,
Thanks for providing the initial design. Please allow me sometime to go through the design & come back to you for any queries.

Hello JK,
Good day and thank you for choosing Power Integrations.
Unfortunately, some of the PI XLS spreadsheet of our devices, including the TinySwitch-III IC, has limitations in their winding construction when configured in multiple outputs. The default configuration for this was stacked winding.
Therefore, my recommendation is to use our PI Expert Online (clicking the link will redirect you to the online tool) instead of the PI XLS spreadsheet. In the PI Expert, there's a stacking option in which it allows you make all the windings separated from each other. Please see the attached image for your reference.
If you can provide your complete input voltage range and preferred transformer core/bobbin family, I will be glad to share with you an initial design based on our TinySwitch-III IC that corresponds to your output requirements and has also separate windings (isolated output GNDs).
Additionally, I would like to inform you as well that our TinySwitch-III has a newer version, which is the TinySwitch-4, that you might want to look into. The TNY-III is still an active product, but it is more preferred to utilize the newer version for its lower no-load input power performance.
Let me know which IC you prefer and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions. I'm more than happy to assist you with this project and answer all your queries.
Thank you and looking forward to your response.
Best regards,
Tommy
