TOP265-Can't achive low input power no-load PS
Hello,
We are trying to design a low-no load adapter power supply using the TOP265 IC.
The problem is that our PS -shown at the attached file-at the no load condition draws 7mA from 230VAC Mains...
We desire, this consumption to be below 1mA.
Can somebody help us with this issue?
Thank you in advance
Best Regards
Nick

Hi PI_Picard,
First of all thank you for your quick response.
Our application is a SMPS for driving a LED disc for a traffic light system.
This power supply is connected at the output of a traffic light controller which can detect the presence or the absence of load. The operation principal is that when the LED disc goes-off the power supply should be turned-off (low power consumption at no-load condition)to let the traffic light controller sense this fault. This is why we need our SMPS to consume very low current at the no-load condition.
As we already wrote before our SMPS draws 7mA at this no-load condition.
The Top265 datasheet refers that your device can achieve no load consumption below 100mW at 265VAC.Also as you can see at this datasheet there are two application examples (pages 15 and 17) in which it seems that the no-load input power consumption is very low.
We have already played around with the snubber circuit but no significant changes have observed.
Because we are using this circuitry for two years now and we only want to make little changes it is very difficult to use other PI solutions.
Is it something we can do to achieve these very low no load consumption referred on the datasheet?
Also, is there something we can do with the switching transformer to minimize this consumption?(change core type or windings turns number etc)
Thank you again.
Best regards,
Nick
So, is there anybody who can tell us how to achieve that 100mW of consumption at the no-load condition refereed on the datasheet?
Please help
Hi,
Have you seen this application example in the datasheet on page 25? In there you can see solutions to reduce the no-load input power. I hope this helps.

page 20 in fact ...
and p17...
running the core at low Bmax ( ~ 120mT ) also helps low power consumption... (and high power losses too)

Hi Nikl@s,
Thanks for your inquiry. May I know your application why you need below 1mA?
Is it possible for you to use other PI solutions?
Meanwhile you can play around and optimize the snubber circuits see if it helps.
