TNY290 - Product Life Cycle & Other Concerns

Posted by: PaulElec on

Dear Power Integrations,

1) Can you provide what the estimated life cycle for the TNY290 would be? So how long would Power Integrations be manufacturing the TNY290 and how long would it be expected to function in the field operating at a power of 20W (within an extreme temperature range of -40 to 85 degrees celsius)?

Also given the design recommendations on the RDR-295 Document : http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/328/rdr295-472105.pdf

2) Can I use the Transformer specifications in RDR-295 to specify a transformer for the application I am using (same output voltage and power)?

3) Are there any other design considerations I should be vary off?

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thank you very much for your interest in using PI products particularly the TNY290.

1. As per estimated life cycle, depending on how rigid the operating condition is, we suppose this depends as per design requirement/application since normally a design is being qualified per MTBF (mean time between failure). However as per normal operating condition, as long as the maximum drain voltage of 725V is not exceeded then TNY290 will be fine.

2. If you're design's input voltage, output voltage, output current, as well as output power is the same with RDR-295, then you can use such transformer specification.

3. I am not sure what you specifically mean about this one, do you mean if you have any other design considerations to take care off?

I don't think he meant life-cycle from the point of view of MTBF....he clearly wants to know for how long PI will continue to manufacture this part...he wouldn't want to design it in only to find that PI has discontinued that part within two years....

Hi Paul,

As for the product life cycle TNY290 is a  relatively new product and we currently do not have any plans to discontinue this. This product is currently being used and designed into various appliances and in standby and auxiliary power supplies for many applications worldwide which have a reasonably long product life cycle. Thank you very much.
