TNY2xx selection

Posted by: mlepage on

I have a design using a TNY280 that works perfectly but I see that the switching frequency when under low load(approx. 60mA at 24V) is much lower than specs(approx. 38kHz). I wonder why. Also, I would like to know what would be the reason(s) for selecting TNY280 vs TNY279 since the specs seem very similar.

Thank you.

The internal clock frequency is 132khz -- because TNYSwitch controls by inhibiting whole discrete cycles the frequency of active cycles will be low a low output power.

TNY280 has more power capability than TNY279

Ok for the clock, thank you.
For the selection of TNY280 vs TNY279, the only difference I can find is in power. For example: for a 85-265VAC input, adapter, there is only 2W in difference between the two devices. So unless the price is significantly lower, why would someone choose the TNY279?

Yes, you are right, slightly lower power and somewhat less expensive
