TinySwitch-III C4 (Y1 Cap) Layout issue

Posted by: MILIND ARJUN PARAB on

Refer to Attached image This is regarding C4 Capacitor Layout Connections. The Schematic connects the C4 Cap to Pin 6 of Transformer Secondary. This Pin is DC + However Layout shows connection to DC - Please advice.

Typically, you want to connect your Y capacitor across the primary/secondary barrier to nodes that are electrically quiet. In the top picture you attached, the Y capacitor is connected the HVDC+ node and the DC- node of the output. Both the HVDC+ and the DC- nodes in this picture are electrically quiet nodes.

In the bottom picture you attached, the output rectifier D6 has been placed in the return path of the output. In this setup, pin 5 of the transformer is not electrically quiet (it's a node with lots of high-frequency switching noise). While pin 5 is not electrically quiet, pin 6 is quiet because it is connected to the bulk capacitor on the output.

In the lower picture, if the output rectifier D6 had been connected to pin 6 of the transformer, the Y capacitor would be connected to pin 5.
