Design with topswitch JX or HX ?

Posted by: Youssef A on

Hello PI enginner,

I have 3 Questions :

1-I used PI expert for a design of an isolated AC DC power supply 120W-12V output, universal input (ambient temp =50C for Adapter) with top switch JX (TOP271EG) and HX(TOP261YN).  The optimisation passed for the JX chip but does not pass with HX chip.

Could you please explain why ? Also why PI Expert XIL does not include the top261YN part in the drop down list ?

(I prefer to use the HX family since it provides TO220 package which is easier to attach heatsink.

2-Where can I send my design (PI expert data) in order to have a transformer sample ? Which Email adress ?

3- Is there any existing PI board example (close to this specifications) or reference design to speed up design for this isolated AC DC 120W/12V output, universal input ?

 Regards

It does work if you use E package for both TOP-HX and TOP-JX.

With Y p[ackage the larger devices dont get used in optimization because they operate only at 66 kHz. If you set switching frequency to 66 k then optimization does work.

for RTSS transformer sample please visit  http://www.powerint.com/en/rtss/pi_rtss

we dont have a comparable design that I can suggest that matches the voltage and power level.

Here is a step by step

Visit http://www.powerint.com/en/design-support/rapid-transformer-samples#BobbinType

Once you have your design please check that the bobbin you are using is supported by the RTSS program. To do so select the correct bobbin type (EE, ETD, EEL, EER etc) from the bottom of the page.

Once  you have selected the bobbin type, then you select the exact bobbin with number of pins. There is a link which says "click here" at the bottom of that page. Clicking this link opens up an email which you can then send to the RTSS program.

This is to make sure that designs that are submitted have a boobin that is supported.
