TOPSwitch-GX with 220V 400Hz main power

Posted by: Borisevich on

Hi!

We use TOPSwitch-GX family in our custom power supply. Our design is based on reference design, given in PI Expert. Output power is about 100-180 W.
Now we need to use this power supply with 220V 400Hz input voltage. Is there any special issues we should get into account or we can use reference schematics without any changes?

Best regards.

It's possible there are some issues/concerns when moving to a 220V/400Hz application. Without the particulars for your design though, it's hard to address what those concerns might be.

Can you please send me your design schematic, PI Expert files, etc? If those arn't available, can you point me in the direction of what reference design you used?

You can most likely run this design from 400 Hz without any issues. You output stage, transformer, and PI device can all stay the same. The one critical area you'll want to investigate will be the bulk cap. At 400 Hz, this bulk cap will see additional ripple current, so it would be a good idea to monitor the temperature of this part and see how hot it gets under worst case test conditions.
