Replacement for obsolete part #TOP210PFI

Posted by: qsiguy on

We have a product that is designed with the TOP210PFI which we are preparing to manufacture another batch. We also have repairs in our shop requiring this part. Our searches for this part show it to be discontinued. Is there a direct replacement available for this?

Thank you for your assistance.

I'm afraid I don't have great news. This is definitely a discontinued part and as our designs have progressed over the years, we don't have a drop-in replacement for this product. If your purchase quantity is on the small side, I would suggest speaking with electronic part surplus companies to see if someone has some old parts sitting on a shelf somewhere. If your purchase quantity is large enough, I could speak with someone and see if there would be any interest in running a small batch for a specific customer order. My guess is that the costs involved might be prohibitive...but again, if the purchase quantities are large enough, I'm happy to ask.

As always, our PI Expert suite of software is available to assist you in designing a power supply with our current line of products.

We'll definitely check around for surplus. Could you give me a ball park quantity that may motivate the company to make us a batch? Are we talking 100, 1,000, 10,000, etc?

Is there a similar product that could be made to work with minimal modifications to the PCB?

Thank you very much for the information.

I'm not sure what order quantities would motivate the powers that be to run this part in a limited fashion...but my guess is that it would need be fairly significant. If you give me a ball park of the quantity you're looking for I'll ask one of the sales guys and see what he says.

As far as an easy replacement goes, without seeing your design it's tough to say. TOP210PFI is a fairly old device and is only a 3 terminal one at that. Even if we found a relatively painless part to substitute, it will require redoing the layout on your PCB which will likely trigger a safety/regulatory agency approval/certification process. At that point, you're basically building a new power supply. :-(

About 1,000 pcs would be a stretch and would likely last us many, many years if we ever used up that many. If the cost was reasonable I may be able to order that many. Of course this all depends on cost. We are already discussing retiring this power supply and if the components are obsolete and unavailable this will likely push us to early retirement.

So please ask about a run of 1,000 and I'd need a cost and lead time estimate as well.

Thanks.

For such an old part, we'd need a pretty big order...definitely well above 1000 pcs. There would also be a fairly long lead time (at least a couple months) since none of our manufacturing facilities currently make this part.

Given the situation, your best bet would really be to see if you can find a surplus supplier that has some on hand. Otherwise, it might be time to retire your PSU. :-(
