Is it OK to use PFS for > 60W multioutputs PSU?

Posted by: lucious77 on

Hi,

I have basic PSU for 12V@4A, 5V@4A - I tried and use flyback for this but there are some problems with output cross-regulation. So I was wondering if PFS can be right choice for this?

Thx
M.

Hi,

The HiperPFs ICs are for active power factor correction boost converters and they are not suitable for designing a low voltage power supply.

Please use the following application note (link provided below) for help with design of multiple output power supplies and achieving superior cross regulation between outputs:

Hi,

My mistake!!! Terrible sorry. I was meant to say TFS not PFS. I'm trying to run project for small ATX factor when summary output power is > 50-60W. Flyback for this solution is not OK specially when 5V needs 6-7A. So I thought to use TFS but found that it's suitable for >150W - is this a rule of thumb or I can simply run TFS for > 50-60W?

Thx

Hi,

You should be able to use HiperTFS but that may not be cost effective.

We have successfully used flyback power supplies for these applications even for power levels as high as 100W.

The TOPSwitch-JX offers a highly cost effective and low component count option for power supplies in this power range.

We have several reference design on our web site for reference.
