Ballpark transformer size help needed, please!

Posted by: ScottB on

I'm looking at doing a design of an AC/DC supply: 90-264 VAC input, 5 VDC @ 1 amp output. I haven't done much of this type of work before -- more DC/DC converters. Schedule is crazy, space is at a premium and the design needs to meet IEC 60950. It's a consumer product. I'd expect the largest component to be the transformer, though a couple of the caps are probably large as well. Can someone please help me ballpark the transformer size with having to go through the whole design process? The maximum height available is 15 mm.

I'm not sure which PI chip would be the best choice, but I suspect something in the LinkSwitch family would be appropriate.

Thanks!
Scott

Designing a transformer should not take you too long if you download Pi expert from http://www.powerint.com/en/pi-expert-download

After have downloaded you can create a new file in in PIXLs. One choose for your controller is LNK II LNK606.

You enter your Vin range, VOUT, IUOT, and LNK606 for the controller. The software run calculations and gives you key parameters and construction details.

The program selects a core for you but you can select another core manually.

If that tool is easy to use, I'll give it a try. Thanks.

I tried PI Expert, and it is pretty easy to use, but the problem is that it requires me to pre-select the PI chip. There are a number of possible options for PI chips which will work for me. How do I figure out, other than by trial and error, which chip will give me the smallest overall solution?

Thanks,
Scott
