LED Driver circuit of 50W 33V 1500mA

Dear Sir / Madam,

we are in need to develop a constant current LED driver for 50W 33V 1500mA LED lamp. Kndly suggest suitable schematic diagram (circuit), appropriate ferrite core transformer design along with complete berger file using either TOP 247Y or TOP 248Y or TOP 249Y or TOP 256EN Switch.

An early response shall be highly appreciated.

Hi Yadav,
Usually above 20W for lighting application requires with Power Factor(PF) , as such it is more suitable to use LNKSwitch-PH(simple,low component count, more reliable than 2-stage solution). A sample design will be released in our web site for 50W using LNKSwitch-PH with Gerber.

Please watch the overview for LinkSwitch-PL and PH if it is okay to use single stage LED driver in your application. Please send us your remarks if you can use this approach instead of having a non-PF solution.

Thanks for valuable advice. We watched overview for LinkSwitch-PL & PH.
Our power output requirement may increase beyond 50W, upto 120W. A non-PF solution is not big problem to our applications, however we may raise P.F. with passive circuit.
You are hereby requested kindly to provide non-PF solution based on TOP-GX Switches.
An early solution shall be highly appreciated.

Hi Yadav,
Please refer to the sample schematic on how to achieve tight output current control. Also attached is the spreadsheet as your reference. You can vary the device size, diode and transformer according to your power level.

You might need to adjust the loop control depending on your application.

Make sure to attach heatsink because your power level is a little bit high.

Thanks for your support. Sorry to say that power switching IC TOP269 is not available with our dealer/ supplier of PI component. You are requested to provide schematic/ solution based on either TOP249 or TOP250 or TOP256EN . Inconvenience is regretted.

Hi Jono,

Circuit is not functioning properly above 1A current and voltage/current regulated IC TSM1051 is not available locally.
Kindly suggest any simple schematic using transistors or output current regulation.

Hi Yadav,
For the previous circuit make sure the no load voltage is higher than the actual voltage of the LED in order to get the correct output current. Plus, the schematic I provided is a starting point for your development. You need to adjust some parts values along the way, even the EMI section need to be re-tuned according to your set-up.

Attached is the simpler secondary output current control as reference. Again, you need to recalculate the component to get the desired output current level.

I hope these parts are all available in your area locally.

Hi Jono,

Kindly convert/ modify the attached schematic as

1. TOP247YN based instead of TOP256EN.
2. Transformer ferrite core EE28 based.
3. Output voltage 40V
4. Output Current 1.5A (CC) to drive high power LED Lamp.

Hi Yadav,
Please refer to the attached spreadsheet using the conditions 1 to 4.
Note: EI and EE core cross sectional area is the same, ignore the spreadsheet core size if I selected EI.

Make sure to use the CC feedback circuit that I provided you before.

Dear Mr. Jono 0r Else,
On taking up commercial production of TOP247Y based 33V 1.5A Constant Current Driver as per the schematic attached here with, we are facing the following problems :

1. On power on to the Circuit Board, appropriate voltage about 41VDC appears at output.
2. Some circuits are functioning properly with 50W HP LED load.
3. Most of the circuits go off after about 15 min operation and auto-restart after few minutes.
4. In some cases either diode P6KE200A or UF4007 or both gets open circuit after excessive heat-up.
5. Ferrite Core Transformer gets excessive heat up.

From the above observations, it appears that Ferrite Core transformer design is still not appropriate. Kindly review the transformer / circuit design and suggest solution to the above problems.

Hi Yadav,
1. May I know the overall system of your design? Does the power loss in your system is enough to raise the device temperature significantly? You might consider adding a heatsink on the design.
2. How much loss you are clamping on P6KE200A? You might need to reduce your leakage inductance to reduce the loss. Consider sandwiching the secondary. That is having a primary winding then secondary winding and then primary winding.

3. Based on your description, your design is too hot. How the LED mounted on your system? Is it heating up the LED driver? You might consider potting the whole system if you have a limited space.

4. Please monitor your primary input current before shutdown, just to make sure it is not due to saturation.

We want to develop a 20 Watt LED driver . Input 77 to 135 V DC . Output 16 V 1 amp . Input under , over voltage and output short circuit protection required . Pls suggest a suitable part . Whether LTY 4217 type driver is suitable.

Please check LYTSwitch-5. It is more suitable for DC input than LYT4.
