Why is surge resistor in DER318?

Posted by: treez on

Hello,

Why is the surge resistor, R26  in DER318?

Page 9 of DER318 says its to stop damage due to line surges. -In this case, why haven't all the Mains LED drivers got such protection?

Is the R26 circuit put there to stop damage in case the customer accidentally connects it to a triac dimmer?

Hi,

LED drivers will have its own protection depending on the application and region: commercial, residential and industrial.  DER 318 is catered for industrial application wherein surge energy is higher as compared to residential application (A19, Par38 etc..).

R26 is not for dimming application, this is mainly a protection for surge.

Lamp are labeled if it is a dimmable or non-dimmable design.  If the end customer is willing to pay extra cost and lower efficiency then use a universal dimmable design to cater both market in a common design.
