2SC0435T2F1-17 Failure on Power-Up — Root Cause Suggestions?

Posted by: mikeh on

Hi,

We're using the 2SC0435T2F1-17 SCALE-2+ driver to control two IGBTs in our system. We've been using this part in production for a while without any issues. However, on a recent power-up, one of the boards experienced a failure — the IC on one channel visibly burned (photo attached; affected IC is highlighted).

No changes were made to the system prior to this event. We'd appreciate any guidance on potential causes — could this point to a board-level failure, or does it suggest a system-level issue?

Happy to provide more details if needed. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Hi Mekeh,

Here I would assume you did a low voltage test with the driver core.

See from the picture, the burned pin should be VISO1, and the most possible cause is the VISO1 overcurrent.

And there is only one channel's IC burned, so we can see the cause is not from primary side.

I could not tell you if this point to a board-level failure or a system-level issue since limited information is provided, my suggestions are as below:

  1. Check the base board by replacing a good driver core;
  2. Check if there is a short-circuit with the load;
  3. Check if any conductive dirty fallen onto the board during testing;
