Custom Transformers - State of affairs

Posted by: IceTea on

Hello all,

It's been a while since I did a PI design (or any other that would require custom magnetics). I still wake up at night recollecting last time, as I nearly got scammed for a substantial amount. I'm aware there's a "component supplier" section, but some of those links 404 on me, others seem somewhat generic. There's also Wuerth in it's many forms but I'm not a huge fan of the somewhat clingy approach they seem to have.

So, what would be the way to go if I had a cost-sensitive design, probably based on DER-258 or something like it, that I would like to source in the far east. Say 25pcs for engineering, buying 1k or more batches once up and running.

Would love to hear some suggestions and experiences, either from visiting forum members or PI staff.

Thanks in advance!

Kris

Hello Kris,

We are not a transformer manufacturer so we cannot provide the production of the transformers themselves.

What we do have is our Rapid Transformer Sample Service. This can be useful for getting sample transformer for use during the prototyping stage. You can find the link here: Rapid Transformer Sample Service (RTSS) | Power Integrations

For larger quantities though, it may be better to reach out to our distributors. They may have more contacts they can provide to help you find a transformer manufacturer. You can find a list of our distributors here: Distributors | Power Integrations

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. I did actually consider the RTSS before and I still might use it but I was hoping to streamline things a bit and do samples where eventual production would take place.

I hadn't considered going through a distri yet. To be perfectly honnest, in my experience the added value is, erh.. not always there. I still might give it a go, but I'm still quite open to the experiences from visiting forum members...
