TOP244YN in place of this TOP244PN ?

Posted by: Abhishek Kumar on

I have an SMPS where the TOP244PN switching IC is used to power the standby section. Is there any alternative in the TNY switcher series I can use in its place?

Also, can I use the TOP244YN package in place of this TOP244PN package? It seems in the PN package they have combined the X and L pins of the YN package and made single M line.

I am not sure what the motivation is for doing this, as there already appears to be a standby design that is working. Using a TinySwitch solution would be a fairly radical change  to the design, as the optocoupler would need to pull down on the TinySwitch EN pin to assert control, whereas in the TOPSwitch design, the opto coupler sources current into the control pin to both power the TopSwitch and control the duty cycle.

It may be possible to come up with a "bodge board" that could be used to sub in an appropriate TinySwitch device, but you would need to know the power capability of the current standby supply and also to make sure that the transformer currently used in the standby supply would be compatible with the TinySwitch design.
