Feedback loop voltage sense point

Posted by: Dhaval Lalani on

Hi all,

My doubt is, Why in all designs, we use gain resistor connected before output filter inductor and TL431 sense resistor after filter inductor???
Is ther any technical reason behind it??
Can we use common point (say after inductor) for output voltage sensing and gain resistor??

Hi Dhaval,
Can you attached similar schematic that you are describing?
It is not that clear what you are trying to describe above.

Hi, Please check attached image for clarification.

Image - 1 : Two sense point

1) For TL431 bias and optocoupler LED supply / feedback current path

2) For output voltage sense

Image - 2 : One sense point

Both optocoupler LED supply and output voltage sense taken from single point

Now my questions are,

Are both configurations result same performance or stability?

Do filter inductor and capacitor make any role in feedback loop?

Hi Dhaval,
There should be no significant difference between the two in terms of performance and stability.
Voltage sensing is placed after the filter since this have less ripple and have better transient load response since this is directly connected to the output load.

Hi Data,

If I take feedback current path after filter inductor, Will it make any adverse effect??

I am not too good in frequency response analysis, but in some documents related to it mentions effect of filter capacitor on pole-zero analysis. I am not sure, but I think such effect should occur with inductor too.

Hi Dhaval,

Don't worry too much about that. It will have a very minimal effect on your transient response.
You can check your output during transient load response (0%-100%-0% load transition) if it will still be acceptable. Most of the time a +/-10% on your nominal output will be acceptable.
