QC3.0 DER494 board issue

Posted by: kokhon23mj on

Hi guys,

My client have studied the DER494 board for QC3.0 charger usage. Able to output the specific current up to 3A as reported in the DER notes for QC complaint phones. Issue now is they tried to use this board to charge non-QC phone, or just normal smart phone, which normal charger can supply up to 1.85A, 1A, and 500mA. 3 types of phone. I was told the board cannot charge those phone. He tried using dummy load and it cannot goes higher than 1A, and sometimes it will enter shutdown mode. I understand from ChyPhy datasheet that it will output 5V at default mode and follow USB BC1.2 standard. What is the current or max current it can output, if a non-QC phone is connected? NOrmally when the battery is under 50% charge, it should draw the max current. Do you have any statement to share, that if enter default mode, the output will be 5V, and max current is 1A? 0.5A? whom determine this?

They have opened up Xiaomi Mi Mix charger which used PI Innoswitch in the design. But it is SCxxx and the ChyPhy IC is also SC0163D. This charger, they tested it with normal non-QC phones, all are working fine. I understand SC p/n is for customized customer, but is there any different compare to DER494 board? Are there any circuitry that need to be add?

Would appreciate your reply soonest. Thanks.

Hi,

It should work even if a non QC compliant phone is used. What exactly is your voltage requirement and current?

Is there a charging profile that should be followed? If your customer used a dummy load say a resistor to draw 1A current it should still work.

Hi,

Voltage and current for non-QC phone should be normal like 5V, 1A. No charging profile to follow. He just wonder why cannot work on non-QC phone? Even with dummy load, as I informed, will shutdown when less than 1A drawn. So, I need your advise what could be wrong. Have anyone tested the DER-494 on normal nonQC phone? Because the ref design notes did not mention at all. Thanks.

Hi,

What if the dummy load is above 1A will it work? Yes, It has been tested.

No. Cant. the output will shutdown if higher current. This is what they observe and sent us the video to proof. Same set-up used with Xiaomi charger, and test with dummy, the current can goes up to 2A.

Hi,

As advised the DER-494 should work with non-QC phone as well. Did the customer tested the DER-494 working well with QC compliant phone? Using a dummy load, can it load any current less than 1A, say 500mA?

Can you verify with the customer if they did something else before doing this test as the board may have been damaged?

Did they provided you any waveform like drain current, BPP and BPS during fault? How did they applied the load at startup or were they able to power-up first and the connect either the dummy load or the non-QC phone?
