Isolated vs Non-solated power

Posted by: amitfou on

Hi,

We are using LNK304 non-isolated power for few years now.

However, lately we have been advised to use isolated power supplies for our electrical switches.

We are not power supply expert and take support from third party for the same but I would like to know if there is any advantage of using isolated vs non isolated. If yes, then what are those factors?

Thanks,

Amit

Hi Amit,

If there is safety requirement then you should go for isolated designs. Otherwise you non isolated designs should work.

If the power supply output/input terminals are user accessible then you should design isolated power supplies other wise if the power supply is completely enclosed with a plastic case and not accessible to user then non isolated designs should work.

Hi PI-NANO,

Thank you so much for your response.

Our product design is such that we have a power board and controller board. Many times while testing it so happens that when we plugin the controller board with the power board (while its connected to power) our controller board gets damaged. Is there anything we can do to prevent this from happening apart from keeping the power board off. Also what is the best possible thing we can do to prevent our power supplies from the power surge. We use MOV but is there something better out there. Obviously our power supplies are low power <3 watts. We have space constraints so can't put bulky components. If you can provide any help or some link in this direction then it would be great.

Thanks once again,

Regards, Amit

Hi Amit,

Could you please send me your schematic, PCB layout and PIExpert/PIXls design file?

Could you please let me what are the devices that has got damaged on the board? Are you using NTC on your design to limit the inrush current?

Regards,

PI-NANO

Hi PI-NANO,

I have attached the PCB layout and Schematic. This is the power board (40mm X 43mm in size). The controller board is separate.

Please let me know if you need that as well. I do not have the PIExpert design file as we just used the designs available on your site.

Please see if we need to change or add componenets or fix our layout. We have a resetable fuse F1 as shown in the Schematic.

We need a power supply that can work in situations where there is lots of power fluctuation.

As of now we need to power 3 relays each 50mA. You can even suggest a design change or new device which you think will be more suitable.

Regards,

Amit

Hi Amit,

What exactly is getting damaged on the board?

If you use MOV is the board operating fiine when you plug in.
