Class II multi output power supply

Posted by: Bouwser on

I would like to design a power supply that is Class II and takes in 120 - 277 VAC and outputs two supplies that are isolated from each other.  Both output supplies should be 5V, however, one needs to be able to supply ~1.2 W and the other only needs ~200 mW.

Can you please recommend a solution?

thanks,

Brent

Hi,

It is easily possile to make such a power supply. Two isolated windings will have to be used for the two outputs. Generally the feedback will be derived from only one winding and hence the output of the second winding may not be very well regulated so to obtain a precise and regulated voltage, a linear regulator is recommended for the second output.

Please review application note AN-22 for additional information:

Hi PI-Sarek,

Thank you for your response.  The app note was helpful and encouraging.  It looks like we will need to design a custom transformer.  Is there a way to prototype a transformer without paying a lot of money to have one tooled up?  I expect I will make mistakes for my first transformer.  How can I quickly and inexpensively iterate a transformer design?

thanks,

Brent

Hi,

There are a couple of options. Firstly there are various transformer vendors listed on our website (link provided below). These vendors are familiar with our products and can help you to obtain a suitable transformer for your design. Many of them will provide transformer prototypes at a reasonable cost.

Another option for you is to downlod our tool called PIExpert, design the power supply using this tool and order the transformer through our own Rapid Transformer Sample Service (RTSS) for which a link is provided below as well.

Transformer vendors often add a lot of value by helping you to optimize the design for manufacturing and selecting the most cost effective core and bobbin options.
